UPDATED MAR 2020. Happy September everyone! Can you believe how fast the year has flown by? Today I want to share some photos of Lago Di Senaiga as well as a bunch of tips and tricks to help you plan your own adventure. This was one of the first hikes I did since moving to Italy and it really had a ‘wow factor’ for me. The thing I noticed though, was that it was hard to find good information on it when I was researching. So here’s a complete guide to help you get there too and I hope it’s helpful.

FAQ for Lago di Senaiga

Where is it located?

Lamon, Belluno, about 90 minutes drive from Vicenza.

What skill is required?

Beginner – it’s easy, but long.

What type of trail is it?

Loop trail.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes.

What should you bring with you?

Where to park

Use ‘Bar Ponte Serra’ in your Google Maps.

As you come up to the bar, you will go over a bridge and an impressive waterfall will be on your right. Try not to get too distracted while you’re driving – it’s beautiful!

The road bends to the right and there is an open space on the right where you can park your car.

How to find the start of the trail

From the parking area, there are two ways you can start the hike. You can see the two options in the picture below.

To decide which to use, all you need to decide is whether you want to see the lake, which is actually a man-made dam, at the start or end of the trail.

It’s a loop trail so you will see it all the same scenery no matter which you choose.

Option 1 is the way to go if you want to see the lake first and this is the way I went.

Heads up, from the parking area, you have to walk on the side of the road with no footpath to get to the start of the trail. Just be careful during that section.

How to see it without the hike

If you don’t want to do the full loop trail, you could take option 1 and it is only a short walk to see the lake.

You could see the lake, take some photos, then turn around and go back the way you came.

Or you could walk a little further to see the cave lookouts, then turn around. If you have kids that don’t like hiking or a busy adventure day schedule, this might be a good option.

The Lago di Senaiga trail

Once you get going, the trail is relatively easy to follow.

You will come up to the lake fairly quickly and come to a bridge that offers you a complete view of the setting. It also makes for a nice spot to take a photo with the lake as the background.

As you continue on your adventure you will pass through a few tunnels. Another tip is to bring a flashlight if you are uncomfortable in the dark or in tunnels.

They are quite open and don’t go on too long, so it’s not too intimidating but I can imagine if you have kids it may be a good idea to bring a flashlight.

After you get past the tunnels then it is an open trail that goes through a jungle-style setting and then out into the open.

We even saw two of these little critters along the way so keep your eyes peeled.

They didn’t seem too fussed that we were there and we just passed by after taking a quick photo.

What to expect

The trail is easy in terms of skill and medium in length. If you have a basic level of fitness and endurance, you’ll be able to nail it.

During the hike, you will walk past people’s houses. Part of the trail is actually the road to get to their driveways and once you see the setting of their backyards it might just blow your mind.

The trail will also bring you past a small, rickety bridge (you don’t have to walk on it, just near it) and then loop around and bring you out by the Bar Ponte Serra.

I stopped in at the bar after the hike for a drink and snack, and it was a nice local spot.

Overall thoughts

I definitely recommend this hike if you are here in North Italy.

It’s a great way to get away from the touristy world, enjoy some time in nature, and also support the local bar when you buy your refreshments afterward.

Other hikes in the area

Lago di Corlo is 15 minutes away. There is a hike at this lake as well or it would be a nice spot to have lunch after you visit Lago di Senaiga.

National Park of the Belluno Dolomites is about an hour away and has some nice, easy hiking paths.

Here’s my guide on day trips in the Dolomites for a lot of other ideas.

People don’t usually associate Italy with nature trails…but mostly the prettiness of its towns. North Italy, as you have highlighted in your post really needs to be talked about more.

I had never heard of this lake before so thanks for sharing! How long did the entire hike take you to finish roundtrip?

It was a fairly long hike, maybe about 5 hours from memory? In saying that I do stop to take a lot of pictures and enjoy the journey so perhaps others would not take as long, but it was fairly long with a few decent inclines.

What a beautiful hike! I will definitely keep this in mind the next time I’m in Italy and have a rental car. Usually if I’m in Italy for a quick trip I’m a slave to public transportation.
